Lakers double up over Shelburne

The Shelburne Vets continue to experience some growing pains early in their 2009 campaign.

After putting together a pair of gutsy wins against Innisfil and Centre Wellington the week before, the Vets returned home to the Bunker on Saturday night only to be doubled up by a skilled Peterborough Lakers squad 8-4.

Down early in the first period by a score of 2-0, Jordan Monahan was first to the board for Shelburne, assisted by Dustin Early, at 11:26.

Travis Galbraith would enter into the fray to score his fourth of the season between another pair of Peterborough markers to send the teams into the second with the score set at 4-2.

Looking to get back into the game, James Shaw helped the Vet's cause with his goal 2:22 into the mid-frame; assisted by Monahan and Norm Craig.

From there, though, the Lakers capitalized on Shelburne miscues and penalties to go up by four heading into the third.

Monahan would score the lone goal of the frame to set the final score of 8-4.

Ever optimistic, Shelburne coach Paul Falkiner looked to the positives that came from the game. "We were pretty good for the most part. Our penalty kill was good, considering the amount of time we were on it. "Tonight, we played good enough to win but took too many penalties and we know we made more than our share of mistakes." Looking at what the team as a whole has to do to win, Falkiner likes where the team is defensively but says, "We can be a little one dimensional at times, we still need to work on our offence."

The team will have lots of time to practice their offence as it will be a full schedule for the team this weekend.

Friday night has Centre Wellington dropping by the Bunker at the CDRC for an 8 p.m. start against the Vets. Then it's on the road for games against Clarington and Caledon on Sunday and Tuesday night respectively.
