Street named after former mayor Large
Contributed Photo VICTOR LARGE WAY: Vic Large, who served as Warden of Dufferin County and Orangeville's mayor and reeve during 28 years on town council, was in town last week for the unveiling of a sign identifying a new street as Victor Large Way. Here, he and current mayor Rob Adams hold the street sign while members of the former mayor's extended family look on. A former mayor of Orangeville has been honoured with the naming of a new street in phase one of the Orangeville Highlands subdivision, off Hansen Boulevard.
The street sign went up last week, noting the years Victor Large served as mayor — 1970 to 1982. In total, Mr. Large served on Orangeville Council for 28 years. He was a councillor 1955-56 and 1985-88, the deputy reeve from 1957 to 1960, 1966-1968, and 1988- 1991, and reeve from 1968- 1970. He served as Dufferin County Warden in 1990 and he is a past president and 60-year member of the Orangeville Legion, and a former warden at St. Mark's Anglican Church.
Another former mayor, James A. Arnott, is also recognized in the same development, with the naming of Arnott Crescent. Mr. Arnott served as mayor from 1930 to 1931.
The Town of Orangeville passed a street naming policy in 1997 and amended it in 2006 to ensure some municipal street names recognize and promote the heritage and identity of the Town. Under the policy, developers/landowners are provided with a list of approved names that must be considered for at least half of the streets in a development. The list includes historical names as well as those of residents who served in the wars, and former mayors, reeves and councillors.
Mr. Large, who has lived on Vancouver Island since 1993, was in Orangeville for the street-naming ceremony on Victor Large Way.
