Stolen car found burned in gravel pit

2009-07-09 / Local News

Orangeville Police are seeking help from the public after a car stolen from a residence in town was found to have been set on fire in an abandoned gravel pit.

Police say the car's owner, a St. Catharines man, was visiting family members on Dawson Road last Saturday and on retiring for the night ensured that the 2006 Dodge was locked in the driveway of the residence.

The next morning the vehicle was gone and the theft was reported to police.

At about 2 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle that was noticed by persons walking in the former pit on the east side of Veteran's Way.

Police say the vehicle had been set on fire and was severely burnt out. They confirmed that it was the 2006 Dodge that had been reported stolen.

Police are continuing their investigation and would like to hear from anyone who can assist with information regarding the theft or the fire. The pit area is a popular location for people walking dogs and residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or findings to police.

A similar incident occurred on June 3, when a pick-up truck was set on fire in the same location. Police were not able to confirm the owner of that vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Criminal Investigation Branch of Orangeville Police at 519-941-2522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-TIPS (8477) or www. sdm-crimestoppers.com.
