Special blood donor clinic next month

2009-07-23 / Local News

Over the next several weeks, Canadian Blood Services is anticipating that hospitals will need more blood for patients than they currently expect to collect. Adding long weekends to the mix only intensifies the problem.

The solution to the problem? More blood donations. And Shelburne residents will have a special opportunity to help out.

The clinic will take place at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Tuesday, August 25, from 3 to 7:30 p.m.

"The growth in hospital need and long weekends mean we need all eligible donors to step forward," said Marg Gow, Community Development Coordinator.

Canadian Blood Services (CBS) needs to maintain blood and platelet supplies for critically ill patients like trauma or cancer patients and patients who require blood transfusions on a regular basis. With a shelf life of only five days, having enough platelets during a long weekend period is always a challenge.

CBS wants to avoid the low inventory situation of last summer so they are encouraging new and regular donors to make and keep their appointments. Central Ontario Region needs to collect 12,550 units of blood in August and all blood types are needed.
