No law against stupidity

As a resident of Shelburne I am aware that there have been incidents involving motor vehicles in town whether parked on the roads or private property. As a result the local police, with the assumed direction and encouragement of the Police Service Board and Council, have embarked on a prevention program. The police check vehicles at night, whether on a public roadway or they enter onto private property to determine if the vehicles are: unlocked, unlocked with keys in view, window(s) open, valuables in plain view or that the vehicle is locked, secure etc.

Although I understand the intent I am offended by this action. It is not against any federal, provincial or municipal statute to leave a vehicle unlocked or insecure at any time. If I were to load up my vehicle with all sorts of goods and leave it unlocked with windows open that would be "stupid" but not illegal. There is no known law against stupidity.

I do not want the local police to trespass onto my private property to determine if my vehicle is secure or insecure. It is not of their concern!

To add insult the notice also includes advertising for mayor/police service board member Ed Crewson Insurance. Should the police unwisely continue with this program perhaps they can approach other local business owners to allow them the opportunity to participate in this car to car advertising by the local police!
