Involvement said needed

On August 13, 2009. I had the pleasure of attending the Melancthon Township Council meeting.

The meetings are held one morning and one evening of each month for residents who are not aware of this.

We need residents to get involved, or at least go to the Melancthon Township website and review the agendas and minutes to know what is going on in our community.

I certainly learn a lot each time I go to a council meeting. I take advantage of the opportunity to submit questions, at times they may seem out there, but they are an avenue to learning what is actually going on with the activities of council. It allows me to get involved.

To date at all of the meetings there has been discussion of the proposed Highlands Quarry which will be located in Melancthon Township.

At the Aug. 13 meeting four individuals had the opportunity to present facts in regards to the potential impact of the proposed quarry: extreme heavy truck traffic, who should pay for technical studies, the homes that are being demolished on lands owned by the Highland companies, resulting in potential lower tax revenue and what control council has on the township's official plan.

All of these people should be applauded for the hard work and time it took to prepare their presentations.

At the end of the presentations, I expected that the Mayor, Debbie Fawcett, or the councillors, would have some comments in regards to the content and time these people have put forth for their community.

Not so, all they received was "well, we have a lot to think about" and the council moved on to the next item on the agenda.

Has this information fallen on deaf ears? Will council have the decency to speak up? Let the ratepayers of Melancthon know that they are concerned and are working on a plan to understand the proposed quarry impact before it is too late, and valuable time is lost.

I would really like to hear council's side. Or have they decided Highlands is too big and they feel they can't make a difference?

We await council's reply.
