Developer wants more houses in Mono subdivision
      A public meeting in Mono Tuesday night concerning a controversial new subdivision near Island Lake was told that the developer, Pine Glen Farms, wants to add 17 new lots to the 323 it already planned. Called Island Lake Phase 3, the subdivision is to be built between First and Second Lines east of Hurontario Street north of Highway 9.

3 Terry Fox Runs this Sunday
      The 29th Annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research will take place this Sunday, September 13, and again this year, Dufferin County will have runs in Orangeville, Shelburne and Grand Valley. For the previous 28 years, hundreds of Dufferin residents have turned up annually for the runs and in the process raised more than $400,000 to aid the ongoing fight against cancer.

OPP lays 100-plus traffic charges
      The OPP stepped up its patrolling and enforcement over the Labour Day Weekend with "Operation Maximum Effort," with the Dufferin detachment laying more than 100 charges against motorists, including 95 speeding charges, two cars seized for racing, and six for seatbelt violations.

Big crowd out for plowing match
      The weather was perfect last Thursday as the Peel -Dufferin Plowmen's Association hosted their 84th annual plowing match near Bolton. East Luther Grand Valley Mayor John Oosterhof won bragging rights when he was victorious in the Mayor's Challenge, beating out host Mayor Marolyn Morrison of Caledon.

St. Mark's to be re-dedicated Sunday
      Dating from 1868, Orangeville's oldest church now has a new look, a new entrance and the town's newest stained glass window. The original brick work on St. Mark's Anglican Church is long gone, covered by a stucco-like, weatherproof grey surfacing.

Trouble, strife in store at Museum
      The Dufferin County Museum and Archives will have Canadian Independent Music Award Winners Trouble & Strife, featuring Larry Kurtz with special guest Paul James, perform at the opening of its 2009 Made of Wood Show. A low-down, hard-edged and soulful blues band, Trouble & Strife was formed in 1997 by a group of like-minded blues lovers who had diverse musical backgrounds.

Dinner raises $311,000 for Headwaters
      Members of the 12th Annual Dinner and Auction committee presented a cheque for $311,000 to Headwaters Health Care Foundation Tuesday representing the proceeds of Ole! A Night in Spain, held last May. All monies raised will be directed towards the purchase of new equipment for Headwaters Health Care Centre.

Quiet summer on the Dufferin pot front
      Dufferin OPP say they have had not been called in to eradicate an outdoor marijuana grow-op this season, or made any arrests in that regard. It could be theorized that the cooler summer the area may have discouraged the growth of pot, which ideally needs a constant temperature between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius.

      HE WAVERLEY BOAT: No one can accuse Alex Lennox of being an impatient man. Using only photographs as a guide, Mr. Lennox dedicated 738 hours and over 7,000 matchsticks to constructing a replica of the Waverley Boat, the last ocean-going paddle steamer in the world, which sails out of Glasgow and tours various points of the British Isles.
