'Big Day' a success
Mono's Big Day Out was a resounding success. The crowd of hundreds and hundreds of Mono residents and admirers from townships all around just kept coming and coming all day. The day was beautiful. There were great vendors of locally produced products and food. The line-ups for the venison and lamb burgers and deserts in the church basement were sometimes long but everyone was in such good spirits that there wasn't even a murmur of discontent. There were so many wonderful activities for adults and children that it is difficult to recount them all. Mono's Big Day Out ended with a wonderful dinner and dancing at the Mono Cliffs Inn and fireworks on the grounds nearby
The wonderful musicians who performed and the exhibit of local artists demonstrated the enormous talent in the Town of Mono. The amazing heritage display of old barns and buildings and photographs and the history of the Town recounted in the Burns United Church to a packed crowd in the morning and to an equally large crowd in the Mono Cliffs Inn in the evening demonstrated a respect for the history of the Town of Mono and Mono Centre in particular that was astounding.
It was very generous of the Mono Cliffs Inn and the Burns United Church and all the Mono Centre residents to make their locations and grounds available for all the events.
Signe Ball, Carol Hall, Kirsten Ball and Jane Fellows who organized the wonderful day with what seemed to be a never-ending team of dedicated local volunteers, deserve our ever-lasting thanks for one of the loveliest days in the history of the Town of Mono. If ever there was a demonstration of what local people can do when they are committed to doing something for their community, this was it.
People flocked to be involved and to help out in every way possible. The pleasure of the day will linger on for well into the Fall and Winter to come.
It was fascinating to meet so many people who had stories to tell about grandparents and extended families that had roots in the Town of Mono and even about their own personal experiences growing up in Mono. They were pleased and excited to come back and visit and talk about their relationship to the Town and re-connect to the things they all held so dear.
It is unfortunate that Mono Council found itself unable to participate in Mono's Big Day Out or make any kind of financial or in kind contribution to the event, but at least almost all the councilors made an effort to show up and participate in the day.
