It was a busy weekend for the Orangeville Crushers.

After having opened their 2009-10 season the week before with a 5-3 win over the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Orangeville was looking to build on that success when Streetsville came to town Friday.

Just as in game one, the trio of Nicholas Vassos, Mike Arnold and Jarrod Connolly would figure prominently on the score sheet for Orangeville.

In the first period, Vassos teamed with Taylor Lukasik in setting up Tyson Fawcett for the Crushers first goal at 5:26 followed closely with a pair off the stick of Arnold. The goals were offset by a pair by Streetsville to make it 3-2 for Orangeville heading into the second.

Connolly was the goto guy in the second and third. After scoring a power-play marker at 12:38 assisted by Vassos and Arnold, Connolly put the nail in the Derby's coffin with an unassisted marker midway through the third to make it 5-2 where the score would remain until the final buzzer.

Nick Gigone, was again solid between the Crushers pipes, turning away 25 of 27 shots.

Saturday night found Orangeville at the Governors Showcase playing against tournament hosts, the Bowmanville Eagles.

Playing scoreless through the first, the only two goals of regulation time were scored in the second period on the power-play. Bowmanville's came first at 4:34 with Norm Ezekiel serving time for boarding but again the trio of Connolly, Vassos and Arnold stepped up to the plate late in the frame with Connolly tossing one past Eagles' goalie Jackson Teichroeb tie the score at 1-1 where it would remain through the third and overtime setting up a shootout to determine the winner.

With the shootout tied at 1-1 after the first three shooters for each team, rookie Beni Berisha put his name on the highlight reel scoring on the next attempt while Gigone stood his ground at the other end to earn Orangeville the hard fought 2-1 victory.

The weekend wrapped up for Orangeville with yet another shootout in Hamilton on Monday.

Playing at the Mountain Arena, Orangeville came up against a determined Red Wings squad. Andrew Rajenovic opened the scoring for Hamilton, picking up a loose puck in front of the Orangeville net and snapping it through the legs of Gigone only to have Connolly return the favour 38 seconds later, picking off a clearing pass in the Wings zone, which he quickly deposited into the back of Hamilton's net.

The Wings would take the lead midway through the first, a lead they would hold onto until 1:41 of the second when Arnold assisted Connolly to tie the score at 2-2.

In the third, it was Arnold's turn. With seven seconds remaining on a Hamilton double minor, he combined with Teri Philip and Matt Chiarantano to give Orangeville the lead with just over 13 minutes to play.

The slim margin evaporated minutes later with Hamilton's Christian Powers catching the Crushers out of position to score shorthanded to make it 3-3.

Despite numerous chance for both team over the balance of regulation and over time, neither team could find that elusive game winning goal leaving a shootout as the only way to resolve the deadlock.

But tonight it was not to be the Crushers night, finding them outscored 2-1 in the shoot out and earning Hamilton the two points for a 4-3 win.

Junior hockey action returns to the Alder Street rink this Friday night when the Crushers take to the red rink ice at 7:30 p.m. to face off against the Newmarket Red Wings. They then trek south to North York on Sunday afternoon where they will play an afternoon contest against the Rangers starting at 3 p.m.
