Popular Humber lecture series returns
Photo/DAN PELTON JOE ANDREWS, director of Humber College's Orangeville campus, has announced the return of the popular Lecture Series. There will be 10 lectures on a eclectic selection of topics. For those whose educational interests range beyond the normal curriculum, the Humber 2009 Lecture Series is returning to Orangeville with an eclectic selection of topics.
The series began in 2007 with the idea, according to Humber Orangeville campus director Joe Andrews, of accommodating "people in town looking for education of a different type."
Participants can attend all 10 lectures for $180, or single lectures for $20.
The series starts Friday, Oct. 16 with early childhood education veteran Julie Valerio presenting "Is there Nature in the Woods," a lecture which explores some current trends in the lives of children and families.
On October 23, Deborah Powell will pass on her expertise in the field of reflexology with the lecture "Stories the Feet can Tell."
Oct. 29 will have Peel Regional Police force veteran Karl Barnhart talking about how law enforcement nation-wide is increasingly called upon to deal with the issue of terrorism. The lecture is called "Police Readiness in an Emergency - Behind the Thin Blue Line."
On Nov. 6, retired professor of astronomy and general sciences Tom Olin will probe the field of astrobiology, the study of the evolution of earth as a planet.
Have you ever wondered how music recordings are made? On Nov. 13, producer and recording engineer Steve Bellamy will provide some insight in his lecture "The Art of Music Recording."
"Everyone's Life could be made into a Movie" on Nov. 20 is where the audience will be able to participate by bringing personal stories which will be brainstormed to exemplify that everyone's life could be made into a movie.
The lecture will be delivered by Eva Ziemsen, professor and co-ordinator of film and television production at Humber College.
Orangeville native and university professor Natalie Evans explores the emotional state of the animal world in "Animal Minds: The Intelligent and Emotional Lives of Animals" on Nov. 27.
On Dec. 4, anyone who ever wondered what it's like to be a comedian will get some insight with "The Dumbells: Comedy in the Trenches" lecture delivered by award-winning journalist and screenwriter Andrew Clark.
On Dec. 11, "The Eagles of Grand River" focuses on the return of the eagles to southern Ontario after becoming almost extinct. The lecture will be delivered by Paul Cross.
Finally, on Dec. 18, "Skin Care for any Age" will be an interactive workshop where participants will learn some of the key steps insuring that their skin is in great condition as they age. Delia Foiorante, professor and technician at the Humber Spa, will guide them through it.
