Atom Flyers battle back but fall 3-2 to Raiders
The Dairy Queen Minor Atom AE Flyers continued their regular season this past week posting a tie and a loss, setting their 2009-10 record at 1-3-1.
The season started well for the Tykes. In pre-season tournament action in Markham, Orangeville racked up 8- 0, 6-0, 5-0 and 8-0 wins before coming up short to Georgetown in the finals by a score of 3-0.
The regular season saw a change of direction for the Flyers as they came up against some teams that have been together for a couple of years.
Orangeville's inexperience together showed, resulting in some disappointing results.
In their two games last week, they looked to have turned things around and played well together.
The Flyers travelled to Milton on Wednesday night and after falling behind 3-1 early, rebounded with three straight goals to take a 4- 3 lead that they held until the final few seconds of the game.
Milton would score a power play goal with seven seconds left to escape with a tie.
Cameron Angot, Ryan Harrison, Tristan Williams and Jackson Hand were the goal scorers while PJ O'Neill, with two, Harrison, Angot, Hand and Williams picked up assists.
Alan Godbout was solid in net and did a great job controlling rebounds all game.
Playing back home on saturday night, there was some apprehension of what would transpire in the game against Georgetown, as the Raiders took it to the Flyers 10-1 in the season opener in Georgetown.
Orangeville proved that the Flyers that showed up in the Markham tournament final was closer to reality than the visitors in Georgetown.
The Raiders opened the scoring before Angot tied it up on a goal assisted by Harrison.
Georgetown jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but Williams brought Orangeville within one with a short-handed goal assisted by Kurtis Cotton.
The Flyers pick up the pace and created some good quality scoring opportunities, but were unable to tie it up and came away on the short end of 3-2 score.
Kyle Shoesmith and Godbout split the goaltending duties and did a great job shutting down the Raider offence.
The Dairy Queen Flyers are off this week, but return to action on the weekend in the Best of The Best tournament in Georgetown.
