Arts council plans war lectures
Can art, traditionally about beauty, portray the horrors of war?
Looking ahead to Remembrance Day, on November 11th, the Dufferin Arts Council is offering a series of three illustrated lectures on the impact of war on artistic expression.
A speaker much in demand, Canadian art historian Gerta Moray will address this topic by discussing how the violence of war found expression in the works of such artists as Picasso and Goya, the role of Canadians who served as artists in two World Wars, and the rise of antiwar and protest art in photographs and film.
The lectures will take place at the Grace Tipling Hall, Shelburne Town Hall, on three Wednesdays, October, 21, 28 and November 4, from 10 am to 12 noon. Tickets are $40 for the series of 3, $20 for a single lecture. They are available from Anne Wilson, 248349 #5 SR, R.R.#5, Orangeville, ON, L9W 2Z2 (519-941- 7982). Cheques should be made payable to the "Dufferin Arts Council". Tickets are also available at BookLore, Orangeville, or at the door.
