Fair results: 2009 Fair drew up to 9,000
The Shelburne Fair Board estimates that between 8,000 and 9,000 people attended this year's fair which started Friday night, Sept. 18, with a Grand Opening that featured a Giant Pumpkin Auction and fair ambassador contest.
Alyssa Coulter Galbraith was crowned the Senior Ambassador, Shae- Lynn Austen the Junior and Tori Sawyers as Fair Princess.
Meanwhile, the feature outside was the Mini-Rod Tractor Pulling Contest.
Saturday featured the usual Heavy Horse Show, 4-H Dairy Show and Sheep Shearing Demo, as well as an all-day Antique Machinery Show, Farmapaloosa, and the children's Ag Education Centre.
In the late afternoon, the exciting Demo Derby ended with Chris Laver victorious in the 4 Cylinder Class feature and Jim Kinsley smashing his way to the top of the feature in V8 cars.
Sunday featured the 4- H Beef Show, the Open Charolais Show, and 4-H & Open Sheep Show with Sheep Shearing Demos.
Sunday at 1 p.m. had the Horse Pulling Contest with a record number of entries and which was won by Lloyd Binns in Heavy Class & Dave Binns in Light.
Also at 1 p.m. was a new event at the fair — Lawn Mower Racing — pitting Western Ontario Outlaws against Ontario Extreme Lawn Racing Association. These racers are from all over Ontario but a local racer was the winner in the Mod Stock Division. Congratulations to Mike Quail!
