Brampton Flying Club donates banner tow to mark arrival of Torch Relay

2009-10-29 / Local News

The Brampton Flying Club is taking an active part in Orangeville's Torch Relay celebration. The club has donated 2.5 hours of banner towing, plus a banner, so Orangeville can welcome the Torch Relay in style.

The banner, to read "Orangeville Torch Relay" will fly overhead as the Torch Relay arrives in Orangeville on December 28, 2009.

The banner tow will fly back and forth along the route and circle over the celebration site at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre as the Torch Relay arrives in Town.

Brampton Flying Club manager Julie Pomeroy notes that this year is the 100th anniversary of flight in Canada and that the Caledon-based club has strong Canadian roots, having existed since 1946 - both good reasons for the club to participate in Canada's Torch Relay.

Flight instructor Julie Marzoli says the club uses the Orangeville area a lot with their business.

"We are the local flying school and the Torch Relay is a great opportunity to do something for the community. It's the perfect opportunity to contribute to such a great event. Now we've got to pray for good weather."

Ms. Marzoli will act as the ground relay for the airborne activities at Orangeville's Torch Relay ceremony, as she co-ordinates both the tow plane and the skydivers that will jump at the end of the celebration.
