Peewee AA Flyers improve record to 8-2

2009-10-29 / Sports

The Hallmark Toyota Peewee AA Flyers recently recorded their eighth win against only two losses so far this season.

In their recent five game set, the team duplicated its season opening 4-1 record.

Exciting wins over Flamborough, Burlington and St Catherines overshadowed a shut loss to Oakville.

A win over Stoney Creek in their last outing is hoped to be the start of yet another winning streak.

The opposition has recorded the first goal in each of the past five games but these Flyers seem comfortable coming from behind.

They keep attacking and finding ways to get goals and win games. Over the past five games, nine different goal scorers have helped the team to victory.

New forward line combinations are beginning to click and the defensive corps are contributing to the offence ever game.

Occasionally however, screams for help from netminders, Cole Quinlan and Connor Davis, can be heard throughout chilled arenas of the Golden Horseshoe.

After the most recent game against Stoney Creek, coach Rocco Spagnolo tried to blame the loss on playing so far above sea level but he did go on to say, "Yeah, how would you like to look up and see guys like that #14 coming at you all night. That guy's a beast. What about #8 - he's a like a buzz saw".

He went on to say " You guys smothered our net like Hamilton air on a summer's night. Sure we get two on ones against you guys because of your style of play but your D are athletic kids and your goalie was like a wall tonight. I wish my boys played with the same passion that you guys do. Its going to be a long drive back down to the Creek tonight".

Stoney Creek did have the first goal of the game but the Flyer's capitalized on their first power play opportunity as the line of DJ Small, Brigg Jones and Reilly White made them pay. Breaden Black quarterbacked the power play and started the play. Unfortunately, Black got his bell rung shortly afterwards and had to leave the game.

Cole Quinlan made two enormous saves in the second period to keep the score tied but clearing trouble late in the period eventually cost the Flyers.

Orangeville kept the pressure on early in the third and eventually it paid off.

Reilly "Hound Dog" White showed good patience as he cleaned up the leftovers and roofed a beauty past the distracted Warriors goaltender.

Brigg Jones and DJ Small showed commitment in front of the net and helped out on the tally.

The fans were still celebrating White's goal when #14, David "Wild Thing" Bath converted a nice pass from Colin Courtney.

Courtney played a strong game on defense and used his quick hands all night long to knock pucks out of the air and clear the front of the net.

The Warriors bounced back with the equalizer after the Flyers were caught up ice in pursuit of the insurance goal.

Their coaches have encouraged the boys to stay positive and keep attacking throughout the season. It paid off when Brigg Jones scored the second power play goal of the game for the Flyers. It stood up as the winner. Ben Mercy and Max Newmann recorded assists on the winning goal
