MP Sylvia Jones - Remembrance Day
Each year on November 11, we pause to remember the thousands of men and women who have volunteered to serve Canada in times of war. We are mindful of the sacrifices of past and present military members. Canadians must never forget that the peace and freedom we enjoy today is a result of the contributions of our veterans over the years.
During times of war, individual acts of heroism occur frequently; only a few are ever recorded and receive official recognition. By remembering all who have served, we recognize our soldiers, sailors and airmen who willingly endured hardship and fear. By remembering their service and their sacrifice, we recognize the tradition of freedom these men and women fought to preserve. They believed that their actions in the present would make a significant difference.
Today, the Canadian Forces is still fighting for democracy and freedom, participating in the mission in Afghanistan and other missions around the world. We must honour our troops but also remember their families. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers and fathers who encourage and support our troops who are currently overseas.
This year I had the privilege of attending the Remembrance Day ceremony in Orangeville. Every event I attend, I am reminded of the important role our Legions play. Whether it's sponsoring a public speaking competition for students or fundraising to upgrade their facility for better accessibility to meet the needs of the community, to providing assistance to a soldier returned from Afghanistan, the Legion is a pillar of community support. Since its inception more than 80 years ago, Legion's have honoured our country's war dead through many acts of Remembrance and by providing support and a strong voice for our service members, past and present and their families.
Over the past number of weeks and on November 11, I have been honoured to lay the provincial wreath at cenotaphs throughout Dufferin-Caledon. I hope everyone had an opportunity this November 11 to take a moment to remember and honour of all our members of the Canadian Forces who protect our freedoms and rights, both past and present.
