MTO decision applauded

Highway 9 is a major artery for traffic to the east of Orangeville. It has been built to handle all types of traffic including heavy trucks, delivery vehicles, service units and a heavy load of cars and light trucks. To service Orangeville from the east and for business to head east from Orangeville we must have an efficient, cost-effective main artery.

A reduction in the speed limit will slow the movement of goods, require more fuel and in some situations force traffic onto other roads not built for this level of traffic.

Highway 9 was in place before any residents, businesses or schools were built along the road. They knew it was a main artery and they knew the purpose of the road. Building along a main road artery and the complaining about the speed is like building beside an airport and then complaining about the noise from airplanes.

We only have a few major roads along which society can move the goods and services we need. Communities that allow development in these roads must be prepared to protect the integrity of these major arteries and not lose sight of the long run needs of society.

I agree with MTO and encourage the maintaining of the existing 80 km/hr speed limit.
