STEVEN BEYERS marked his return to the Crushers lineup with a goal and an assist in Orangeville's 3-2 win over Streetsville on Saturday night. Photo/MIKE MALONEY Orangeville Crushers edged over into the second half of their 2009- 10 season this past weekend with a 3-2 win over the visiting Streetsville Derby's in their lone game of the weekend last Friday night at the Alder Street Community Centre.
The Crushers have struggled of late with injuries to key players wreaking havoc on the lineup. So it was a welcome sight for many as Steven Beyers finally found himself back in the lineup for Orangeville, Beyers, who has been out recovering from a severe injury incurred playing against Couchiching in last season's playoffs, wasted no time in re-establishing himself on the front end for Orangeville.
Teaming up with Nicholas Vassos and Griffin Lacey, it was Beyers opening the scoring at 13:31 of the first period.
Streetsville would get that one back however just under a minute later to tie the score at 1-1.
Second period action had Orangeville again out to an early lead when Philip Teri notched his eighth of the season with an assist from Krystian Yorke just 28 seconds into the mid frame.
Streetsville continued to soldier on, despite a relentless assault by the Crushers offence, and was rewarded for its efforts with a goal from C.J. Pullar at 16:04 to again draw even with Orangeville.
It was midway through the third, however, that proved to be the difference as Jared Martin scored a wellearned goal with 9:27 left to play which would stand as the game winner.
Making the initial play, carrying the puck through centre and across the Derby's blueline, Martin passed it off to Vassos and Beyers who each had a shot on goal. But it was Martin, following up on the tail end of the play, who knocked Beyers' rebound across the goal line for the goal.
Getting the start in goal again, Nick Gigone was solid between the pipes for Orangevile, turning away 35 of 37 shots to preserve the Crushers 3-2 win.
Currently, Orangeville sits fifth in the standings with a total of 31 points, just two back of Toronto heading into the weekend with a pair of big games on the schedule.
Friday night, it's league leading Burlington coming to town for a 7:30 start against Orangeville at the Alder Street arena.
Saturday will find the Crushers at the Chesswood rink up against Toronto before they wrap up the weekend in North York Sunday night, playing the Rangers at 8 p.m.
