Quarry questions abound

Re: Think about what each writer is fighting for (Nov. 5th) We, as concerned citizens Dufferin County have some questions regarding the possibility of the excavation of large limestone quarry in our area.

Is Highland Companies financed by an American hedge fund?

How much money has been received or promised Orangeville Council for initiating railroad construction? What has been promised other municipalities, and for what concessions?

How many local employees will be hired by Highland Companies and for how long?

Is it impartial for the Ontario Sand, Stone and Gravel Association to be in charge of levying and regulating the rehabilitation procedures of Ontario aggregate operations? Why is this not still being done by the Ministry of Natural Resources?

Is it true that mines that are too deep (which this one sounds like it will be) don't have to be rehabilitated? Is there an example of the rehabilitation of a deep limestone quarry which has been returned to the original ecosystem, and fertile farmland which will sustain deep rooted crops?

Has an independent hydrologist been hired to ensure that all environmental concerns are met for the present and future generations? We care about our land and know that jobs are needed in this area. Our concern is that any developmental changes be made in an environmentally sensitive way.
