Orangeville man given philanthropy award

An Orangeville resident was in a select group of organizations and individuals recognized last week as winners of Philanthropy Awards by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Toronto Chapter.

John Hunkin received the award at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in recognition of his involvement with the St. Michael's Hospital Foundation, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and York University.

The association said Mr. Hunkin's record of volunteerism "combines personal generosity with a magnificent ability to inspire and motivate others to give. He has built a legacy of true philanthropic leadership, powered by both passion and business sense."

He was described as "passionate about the importance of philanthropy, and the role of corporate and community leaders in teaching young Canadians to give back through gifts of time and resources."

The Philanthropy Awards have been honouring leadership in philanthropy since 1995. They have been organized by The Association of Fundraising Professionals, a recognized leader in promoting philanthropy and providing education, training and best practices for those in the fundraising profession.
