Better system, even with flaws
The editor criticizes Sarah Palin for her remarks about what the Democrats may do when the health care reform would be accepted. It should be remembered that when the Democrats were in power during the Clinton administration that a bill approved by Congress banning partial birth abortion was vetoed by Clinton two times. In contrast, a similar bill passed by Congress was signed into law by the Bush administration and the practice was stopped. The Republicans, as a whole, are more pro-life than the Democrats.
I am old enough to remember the German Nazi regime in Holland when one day, suddenly, all the handicapped people in health care institutions were sent home. It was not safe any more and the fear was they might be euthanized. Now, so many years later, in the Netherlands old people are afraid to go to the hospital because they are not sure they are safe, if their lives are considered worth saving. Now it is not the Nazis but their own people. A sign of the time of moral decay in that country.
What about Canada? The euthanasia question is again on the table in Parliament through
private member's bill from a Bloc Member of Parliament. On the matter of abortion here in Canada there is not even a law to put limits on it. Canada's "glorified health care system" pays the bills. It does not matter if you are opposed to it for conscience sake, your tax dollars are used for it just the same. Ultimately though, it is the government who is responsible for that and not the taxpayer.
That is one of the main reasons I like the health care system in the U.S. better, even with all its flaws. You can make sure your insurance does not cover abortions.
When I came to Canada in the 1950s we were warned that health care was expensive. That's why members of the Christian Reformed Church advocated health care insurance plans to new immigrants with no waiting period for health care coverage.
Another disagreement I have with the editor is that he seems to put human life and animal (pet) life on the same level. Man/Woman was created in the image of God whereas animals are not. Ecclesiastes 3:21 puts it this way: "Thou knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth." (KJV). In other words man is created for eternity whether for heaven or for hell, while animals are created for eternity.
In conclusion, I would counsel anyone while there is time, to make peace with your maker, the Maker of heaven and earth. We will all have to give account of our deeds and thoughts to the judge of all the earth (Gen. 18:25). There is no escape if we are not covered by the blood of Christ. There is hope, for we read in Matthew 20:28 that the Son of Man gave His life, a ransom for many. I John 1:9 and Acts 2:21 record that those who confess their sin and call upon the name of the Lord in faith will be saved.
