Fish' edged by Rocks
Shelburne Muskies may have played one of their best defensive games of the season but just couldn't turn the tide of momentum their way as the Elora Rocks pulled out a come from behind 3-2 overtime win at the CDRC on Saturday night.
Leading the Fish by three points heading into the game, Shelburne knew this was a must win if they had hopes of overtaking Elora for first place in the WOAA Northern Division standings.
From start to finish, the game proved to be a defensive battle for both sides with Shelburne controlling most of the game. Playing scoreless through the opening frame, it was the Muskies drawing first blood just under seven minutes into the second with Sean Thompson doing the honours with help from Matt Lougheed and Derrick Robson.
Elora would, however, get that back just over a minute later. With Robson earning two in the box for tripping, Rocks' Richard Colwell managed to get one past Rob Senay on the power-play and deadlock the score at 1-1.
Shelburne returned the favour early in the third as Sean Connor notched his eighth of the season on the powerplay with 15:20 left on the clock.
But Elora redoubled their efforts and with just three seconds remaining, Jeremy Machin scored to force overtime.
With momentum now on their side, Elora snatched away the win on a goal from John Lunney with 1:27 left on the OT clock to record the 3-2 win.
The weekend ahead will be another busy one for the Muskies. Currently with 16 points, tied for second with Saugeen Shores, Shelburne needs to win to keep pace with the Winterhawks and stay ahead of Ripley and Durham who are within striking distance, just one and two points back respectively.
Friday and Saturday night, the Fish find themselves at home, first to Palmerston and then Shallow Lake before heading out to Drayton for a matinee game against the Icemen..
