K-9 assists in arrest

A 25-year-old Brantford man was arrested by Orangeville police after allegedly breaking into a coin box outside Headwaters Health Care Centre early Sunday.

Police were called at about 2:30 a.m. after a security guard saw a man breaking into the coin box of a parking gate outside the hospital.

The man fled the scene when police arrived, but the Orangeville Police K-9 Unit attended and tracked the suspect to the back yard of a Jay Crescent residence where the suspect was arrested by police. bag containing a small number of $2 coins was also seized from the scene.

Matthew Thomas Gilks, 25, of Brantford was charged with theft under

5,000, mischief, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of

burglary tool.

Released from custody following a bail hearing, he is scheduled to appear in court in Orangeville on February 2.
