Crushers pull out weekend pair
With the playoffs looming just around the corner, Orangeville Crushers continue their winning ways and edging their way up the Central Canadian Hockey League Western Division standings.
Playing both games at home, Orangeville staged a come-frombehind 6-5 victory over the Dixie Beehives on Friday night before upsetting Cobourg 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.
Perhaps still smarting from a 5-3 loss at the hands of Newmarket the night before, the Crushers came out flat in the first period of play while a resurgent Dixie squad was more than up to the challenge, getting out to an early 3- 0 lead midway through the opening frame.
They continued their control of the game into the second period adding another to make it 4-0 before Orangeville woke up from their reverie on a power-play goal scored by Cody Britton with assists from Nicholas Vassos and newcomer Jonathan Demme.
Britton continued to be a whirling dervish on the Crushers offence in the Dixie zone, setting up Krystian Yorke for his eighth of the season less than a minute later.
Combining with Jacob Chidlow, Yorke returned the favour to set up Britton for his second on the night to draw Orangeville back within striking distance at the 13 minute mark of the second.
Dixie rounded out the second with a powerplay marker of their own, it was all Orangeville in the third.
Griffen Lacey and Trent Hawke each found a way past Beehives netminder Michael D'Angelo before Tyson Fawcett wired home what would prove to be the game winner with 3:17 left in regulation time.
Orangeville then held off the Dixie assault to post the 6-5 win.
Saturday night, it was the Cobourg Cougars in town, taking their place on the visitors bench of the Alder Street rink.
Britton would be a spark igniting the Crushers, scoring first for Orangeville just over a minute into the game then with the help of Yorke, set up Vassos to make it 2-0.
Cobourg edged their way onto the scoreboard with a power-play goal late in the first, then carried that momentum forward with a pair in the second to take a 3-2 lead into the third.
In the third, both teams had their chances but it was Orangeville making the most of theirs as they cranked up the pressure and were rewarded with a goal from Jared Martin to even the score at 3-3 where it would remain until the buzzer sounded to end regulation time.
It didn't take long in overtime, though, for the game to be decided with Alex Guptill popping in the winner just 30 seconds into the extra frame, assisted by Demme and Vassos.
With the wins, Orangeville's point total increased to 55 for the season, enough to move up to third in the standings ahead of Toronto (54 points) and Hamilton (53 points) with five games remaining on the schedule.
This weekend again will again find the Crushers at home for both games. Friday night, it's North York making the trek to town while Saturday night, the St Michael's Buzzers will be providing the opposition. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Alder Street Community Centre and tickets are available at the door.
