Official town crier in World Town Crier tourney
Betty Kading, Orangeville’s Official Town Crier, has become a tradition at opening ceremonies and happenings. Last weekend, she received notification by e-mail that she has been chosen by the selection committee as one of the ‘fortunate forty’ who will compete in June at the Chester World Town Crier Tournament 2010., in Chester, England.
There were 55 hopefuls, but due to a downturn in the British economy, a limit of 40 Criers was set, in order to stay within budget. In addition, to further help defray costs, each Crier has been asked to pay their entrance fee and their own way to England, but once in Chester, all lodging, meals and transportation will be provided.
The selection committee says it is looking for:
What the selection committee looked for:
• “Evidence of excellence as demonstrated by previous competition successes.”
• “Distinctive attributes that would appeal to the media.”
• “Additional talents that would enhance the event as a whole.”
• “The ability to offer entertainment at our evening events and Talent Show.”
Betty is thrilled to be among those selected for the great privilege and opportunity to enter this tournament with her national and international colleagues. She intends to do her utmost to perform at the calibre required in the most prestigious of town crier competitions, while representing Orangeville as a goodwill ambassador.
