Weekend split for Orangeville Crushers

Orangeville Crushers continue to sit in the top half of the CCHL Western Division tied at 57 points with Hamilton for third place, thanks in part to a weekend split.

Playing both games at home, the Crushers rebounded from a 5-2 loss at the hands of North York on Friday night and persevered to notch a 5-4 shootout win over St Michaels on Saturday.

Friday night’s contest against the Rangers saw Orangeville start off on the right foot with Tyson Fawcett and Philip Teri scoring early in the second to give the Crushers a 2-0 lead.

It wasn't long, though, before North York figured out Crushers goalie Nick Gigone; adding four of their own in the bottom half of two before capping things off with lone third period goal to make it 5-2 for the Rangers at the final buzzer.

Saturday night, Alex Guptill's power-play goal from Griffen Lacey and Trent Hawke at 5:38 of the first opened the scoring for Orangeville against the St Michaels Buzzers.

St Mike's returned the favour midway through the second on a power-play, then chipped in another less than a minute later to take the lead.

Orangeville's Nicholas Vassos put the score back on an even keel tied at 2-2 before the Buzzers Daniel Ciampani's unassisted marker with 1:03 left in the period again put St Michaels out front by

one heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation time.

A few choice words from coach Dale Hawerchuk in between periods seemed to have some effect on his charges and they responded with two goals–one from Lacey and the other from Hawke–to take back the lead, which they held until the dying seconds of the game. With their goalie pulled in favour or an extra attacker, Buzzers Mike Hawkrigg tied the score at 4-4, where it remained through overtime to force a shootout to decide the winner.

Both Lacey and Vassos missed their shots, but Guptill found the range on his.

At the other end of the rink, Orangeville goalie Mike Santaguida stonewalled the Buzzers shooters give the Crushers a well earned 5-4 win.

With only four games remaining on the regular season schedule, Orangeville takes the show on the road this weekend. Saturday, the Crushers find themselves making the long trek north for a date with the Seguin Bruins while on Sunday night, its south to the Westwood Arena take on the Dixie Beehives.
