Crushers look for strong finish
It looks like the playoff picture is again going down to the wire for the Orangeville Crushers as the team sits deadlocked with Hamilton for third place in the CCHL Western Division standings with just one week left to go in the regular season.
Tied at 61 points each, the Crushers have their sights zeroed in on third place and they did what they could to hang onto it, winning both their weekend games.
Saturday night found Orangeville up north at the Humphreys Community Centre for a game against the Seguin Bruins who, despite being out of the post season picture already, put in a solid effort against Orangeville.
Cody Britton opened the scoring early in the first for the Crushers, teaming up with linemates Nicholas Vassos and Krystian Yorke.
In the second, Seguin, despite being out hustled and outshot by Orangeville, managed to tie the game at 1-1. That’s the score would remain until early in the third when Orangeville turned up the heat with three unanswered goals.
First to the mark was Scott Collins, seeing time on the power-play, followed next by Griffen Lacey who was assisted by Trent Hawke. Hawke, himself, scored unassisted at the 5:08 mark to make it 4-1 for the Crushers.
Despite being outshot by a 2-1 margin in the third, Seguin kept things interesting, drawing back within two on a goal from Ryan Brain before Britton put it away with his second of the game - an empty netter to make it 5-2 for Orangeville at the final buzzer.
Sunday night, though, started out with some early anxious moments in Etobicoke against the Streetsville Derbys, where the Crushers found themselves down 4-0 in the early minutes of the second period.
Again, "inspirational words" between periods from coach Dale Hawerchuk seemed to have some effect on the Crushers, who cranked up the play and turned up the heat in the Streetsville end.
Deluging Derby's netminder Eric Szymczyk with shots soon payed dividends for Orangeville with Hawke and Yorke notching singles while Vassos tagged a pair including a beautiful laser- guided slapshot to the top corner, just under the crossbar, to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation time.
Tyson Fawcett picked up where his team mates left off in the second to give the Crushers a 5-4 lead just 2:38 into the third.
Streetsville’s Jack Woolford scoring his fourth of the night, made it 5-5 where the score remained and forced the two teams into overtime to resolve their differences.
Again it was Hawke stepping up and answering the call for Orangeville. Streaking down the left side alone, Hawke snapped a wrist shot from just outside the face-off circle that threaded its way past Streetsville's goaltender, 3:39 into overtime for the game winner.
Orangeville plays their final home game Friday night at the Alder Street arena versus Seguin before wrapping up the regular season on Sunday afternoon in Toronto against the St Michaels Buzzers.
