The Shelburne Vets Jr “C” Lacrosse Club has announced the hiring of Mike Chesterman as the team’s new head coach for the 2010 season.

Chesterman who is a City of Barrie resident as well as a city of Vaughan firefighter, knows all about what it takes to put a competitive team on the floor. He played his minor lacrosse in Brampton as well as in Caledon.

Chesterman’s experince on the floor includes with Brampton playing one year of Junior B as well as four years at the Junior A level followed by two years in the Major ranks for the Excelsiors

He has coached over the past six or seven years since his playing days ended, the exception of last year when he recently got married.

“Mike coaches the way he played which is a no nonsense, disciplined style of lacrosse where the team comes first. Mike is a big man and the players soon know he means business when they show up at the arena, make no mistake about that.” stated Vets GM Barry Trood.

The club is looking to improve on its 5-11 record of last year which slide from its 8-8 record in 2008.

This year the Vets will be without the services of veterans, goalie Scott Rooney, Cory Sinclair as well as Travis Galbraith all of whom went overage. The team which had number of rookies in their lineup last year is looking for a marked improvement this coming year.

Veteran offensive players Miles Montgomery ,Ben Syme , Josh Menzies, Jordan Monahan and Matt Volpe are expected to lead the troops this year while second year players Jesse Jamieson, Wade Mackey , Tyler Greer , David Irons, and Luke Burke should all give the Vets added scoring depth up front this year.

Daniel Dittmann, Trevor McKee, Norm Craig and Dustin Early will be keys to anchoring the backend this year.

The Vets are also currently in negotiations with another Jr “C” team as well as Soo Minor lacrosse to play a promotional/ league game in May in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

Details are still being worked on but it is hoped that it can be put together to showcase lacrosse in the northern city.

Try out dates will be forthcoming and players wishing more information can call Barry Trood (GM) at 519-307-1744 for more info.
