Crushers ready for Streetsville Derbys
After a long 50 game regular season schedule, the Orangeville Crushers are shifting gears for the playoff race, facing off against the Streetsville Derbys in the opening round of the Central Canadian Hockey League quarter finals starting this week.
The Crushers have played hot and cold through the regular season and this last one was no exception.
With Nicholas Vassos, Cody Britton and Stephen Beyers each scoring twice and Calvin Higley recording the lone single, Orangeville rolled to a 7-0 win over Seguin on Friday night only to have St Michaels "hand them their hat" and a 10-3 loss in their final regular season game on Sunday afternoon.
For Crusher coach Dale Hawerchuk, it was a disappointing way to end the schedule heading into the playoffs. "A lot of guys just didn't show up to play tonight. We let them dominate the game, took a lot of stupid penalties and just played undisciplined hockey. Hopefully, this will be a good wake up call for the guys heading into the playoffs".
Finishing the season seated fourth in the highly competitive West division, Orangeville went 4-0 in regular season action against the Derbys.
But if their last meeting was any indication – a 6-5 OT squeaker by the Crushers – Streetsville has other plans for Orangeville in the post season.
Game one of this best of seven series was slated to take to the ice of the Alder Street Arena at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night (results unavailable at press time) as well as game two in Orangeville on Friday. Games three and four move south to the Derbys home ice at the Westwood Rink in Etobicoke on Sunday February 14th and Wednesday February 17th.
