Sweep 81’s, Muskies take aim at ‘Hawks
With wins on Friday night and Saturday, the Shelburne Muskies took care of a "little bit of house cleaning" this past weekend, sweeping away the Palmerston 81's in three straight to advance to the next round of their quest for the WOAA Senior Mens championship.
Already leading the series by one game thanks to a 6-3 win the week before, Shelburne headed off to Palmerston on Friday night looking to continue their winning ways.
Rob Senay again received the nod to start in goal and, as usual, was a key player out on the ice with another strong game between the pipes for Shelburne. Senay was not just instrumental on the defensive side but offensively as well, collecting a pair of assists along the way. The first came on a Shelburne power-play goal by Sean Thompson early in the second period that tied the score at 1- 1.
Chris Greer followed that up with his second of the playoff less than a minute later, only to have Palmerston tie it up once more at the 12:22 mark of the second period.
But from that point forward it was all Shelburne as the Fish turned up the offence and took control of the game once and for all.
Bill Boyes scored what would prove to be the game winner at 10:55 of the second, with assists from Matt Lougheed and John MacArthur, before Tristan Fairburn's shorthanded goal with 4:01 left on the clock rounded out the second period scoring.
Through the third, both teams traded almost shot for shot but it was one by Jeff McCarty at 17:38 that really cushioned the lead and put the game out of reach for Palmerston and seal a 5-2 win for the Muskies.
Playing back at the CDRC again on Saturday night, Palmerston again saw themselves holding a 1- 0 lead after the first period of play. Unlike Friday night however, the 81's decided to deviate from the Muskies script and added another pair off the top of to grab a 3-0 lead passing the midway point.
With tempers rising, things got busy in the penalty box and opened up some room on the ice. Apparently, room to roam was just what Muskies’ Derrick Robson was looking for.
Playing shorthanded, Robson struck first with 5:43 left in the second teaming up with Josh Duerden and Derek Smith. The Robson- Smith-Duerden line cashed in again three minutes later, this time with Smith recording the scoring honours and brother Zac Duerden collecting the assist. the second, Robson cancelled all bets on Palmerston, scoring once more shorthanded for Shelburne and equaling the score at 3-3 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation time.
Now riding the wave, Shelburne took it to the 81's, peppering Palmerston cager Scott Walls with shot after shot until Kevin Tuckey set up Zac Duerden to break the deadlock with just 2:04 left on the clock.
Backs to the wall, Palmerston tried for the equalizer but the Fish were not going to let this one out of the net and held on for the 4-3 win and in the process, take their best of five quarterfinal in three straight.
Things however will only get tougher from here for Shelburne. Starting Saturday night, the Muskies will have their chance for redemption against the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks who last season, edged the underdog Muskies in overtime of game seven of the WOAA North Division final to eliminate Shelburne.
This year, it is the Winterhawks who will find themselves under the gun as the Fish are favoured by many to win this series, but you can be sure Saugeen Shores will be coming to play.
Game one of this bestof seven series takes to the ice of the CDRC at 8 p.m. on Saturday night with games two and three the weekend following.
