Change said needed - consider running for a term
Municipal politicians are responsible for overseeing the administration, including the establishment of by-laws and regulations, of our communities.
In recent months we have had a few letters commenting on the actions or lack of activity of these politicians. Many millions of dollars are involved in the operation of the various communities in this area. To ensure that our funds are well spent and that we receive top quality service we must have interested individuals as politicians.
To be effective, these individuals must be willing to ask specific questions about all expenditures, procedures, contracting and the day-to-day operations of the administration.
Elected officials must be objective and not become part of the administration, after all, they are our “auditors.”
We, as individuals in the community, must also do our part. Where possible, individuals should be prepared to volunteer for committees and run for an elected position. As voters, we must consider new candidates in terms of - is it time for change?
A number of municipal politicians in this area have been in their positions for many years.
While I have written letters to suggest that second and third term officials should volunteer for different committees to avoid becoming complacent, most have not.
We need a “fresh” look and
is time to move on and not seek re-election for the same position. If they do, this will provide a number of openings for new candidates.
It is always difficult to get more votes than an incumbent because voters are often lazy and just vote for the name they recognize.
I encourage any reader to consider running for a term and contributing to your community. It will require commitment, but you will learn a great deal and definitely make a contribution.
We need many people to spread the responsibility. Now is the time to start your campaign for the election this fall.
