Headwaters Racquet Club celebrates with open house targeting families
Orangeville’s new Headwaters Racquet Club, which aims to win recognition as Canada’s best indoor tennis facility, held a Free Family Day open house Monday at the facility on Dufferin 109 at Riddell Road that boasts four indoor courts designed by tennis legend Harry Fauquier.
The 60,000-squarefoot facility opened for business in June. In addition to the four indoor tennis courts, four outdoor courts will be ready next spring, and there are four international squash courts a first for the Headwaters area – two workout rooms, a full contingent of the latest fitness equipment, fitness and yoga classes, as well as great change rooms with towel service, lockers, steam rooms and saunas.
There’s a pro shop and last, but certainly not least, members and their guests can head upstairs after their play to enjoy drinks and a meal in Greystones West, a splashy bar and restaurant that overlooks the tennis courts.
Club manager JoAnn Pilkey says the complex “offers people living in and around Orangeville a great opportunity to enjoy their favorite activities in a state-ofthe art facility with a family atmosphere.”
Jessica Keats- Marchildon, who’s in charge of membership services and acts as Director of Children's Programming, says the classes that are included “are high quality programs that we offer and are really trying to pump up.”
Describing Headwaters as “a family oriented health and fitness club offering state of the art fitness equipment, squash courts, and tennis courts, all under one roof,” she says of the club’s staff: “We aim to exceed your expectations around every corner. With the many amenities available within the club, we strive to make your visit much more than a workout.
She says one club program, Cardio Tennis, is “a new, fun group activity featuring drills to give players of all abilities an ultimate, high energy workout.
“Taught by a teaching professional, Cardio Tennis includes a warmup, cardio workout, and cool down phases. If you are looking for a great new way to get in shape and to burn calories, you must try Cardio Tennis.”
Another program, Zumba, “fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easyto follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away,” she said, adding: “Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked.
Zumba Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorieburning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life!”
Then there is Group Power, a 60-minute, full body barbell program that she says “strengthens all your major muscles in an inspiring, motivating group environment with fantastic music and awesome instructors.”
Brian Millar, a longtime pro, has set up round-robin play, clinics, lessons and other programs for people of all ages.
“What I like the most,” he says, “is seeing all age groups playing the game – from five to 95.”
Mr. Millar likes to introduce players to Tennis Fitness, “an hour-long program that puts players through their paces and helps them with their strokes.” And then there’s the Friday evening Happy Hour Mixed Doubles play.
Susan Casson is teaching the juniors “progressive tennis.” By giving kids smaller racquets, using lower nets and slower balls, they learn quickly. As these youngsters improve, they can move into an intermediate program or join the high-performance players who want to compete in tournaments.
The rubberized courts, great for anyone with aging knees and hips, aren’t the only thing that will attract adults.
They can choose from a variety of organized play, which will make it easy to get out on the courts at least a couple of times a week.
