Rotary club marks founding with pledge to arena project
The Rotary Club of Shelburne celebrated Rotary International’s 105th anniversary by making a pledge of $25,000 for the renovation of the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (Shelburne Arena).
Rotary Club President Frank Fender noted why the Club made this commitment, “The Arena is a very important part of this community year-round, including being the venue for the Rotary Club’s Fiddle Championship every August. We are pleased to be able to contribute significantly to the renovation project.”
Rotary, a global network of community volunteers, is one of the largest and most influential international humanitarian service organizations worldwide. Founded in Chicago on February 23, 1905, the club today has over 1.2 million members in 33,000 local Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
President Fender was on hand in Shelburne as Mayor Ed Crewson declared Rotary Day on February 23.
Rotary members, as volunteers, conduct projects to address today’s humanitarian challenges, including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns while encouraging high standards in all vocations. They strive to build goodwill and peace, and provide humanitarian service in their communities and throughout the world.
The Rotary Club of Shelburne joins Rotary clubs around the world to recognize the day, also known as Rotary’s “World Understanding and Peace Day.”
The Rotary Club of Shelburne will be hosting a special meeting on April 22, at the Shelburne Curling Club starting at 6:00 p.m. The evening will include dinner and a guest speaker, as do most regular Rotary meetings. The club welcomes all those who are interested in finding out more about Rotary and joining the Rotary Club of Shelburne to come out to this event.
