Kids’ camps in Shelburne during March Break

2010-03-04 / Local News

Parents seeking a creative experience to stimulate their kids at a reasonable price this March Break will have no trouble finding it in Shelburne.

The Shelburne Creative Learning Centre, which runs classes throughout the year will also be offering half and full day alternatives for kids at March Break.

Two different day camps are scheduled to run from Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 19, inclusive. The morning will be dedicated to drama with Theatre Camp running from 9am to 12noon and cuisine is scheduled for the afternoon with Cook’n Kids from 1 to 4 p.m.

Led by Marni Walsh, the Theatre Camp program will cover all aspects of the art of theatre including fun and interactive drama games, improvisational scene work, prop and costume construction, sound effects, special effects and even a little bit of magic. Ms. Walsh started in professional theatre at the age of 17, graduated from York University with a Special Honours Degree in Theatre Performance, and spent years working in theatre, T.V. and film in Toronto before partnering with her husband and professional magician, Steve Baker, in the business of magical entertainment. The week-long theatre camp will culminate with a short production free to parents and the public.

Children ages 8-16 will participate in the production from the bottom up with the intent of developing a sense of the craft, as well as self confidence with the intent of allowing them to take ownership of the project. The cost for the week of Theatre Camp is $85. You can register your child by calling 519- 923-9998.

Cook’n Kids will give children ages 7-16 an opportunity to learn the basics of cooking as well as the importance of kitchen safety. Led by local accomplished caterer Heather Hayes, the training will be hands on with lots of nibbling and tasting along the way.

Kids will start off the week by learning measuring, mixing, and cutting skills. They will then have the chance to plan, shop and prepare the food for the meal to conclude both the Theatre and Cook’n Kids Camps. This year will focus on supped up salads, how to make their own dressings, a dinner they could make from scratch at home, and of course a few sweets for good measure. As always, food safety and kitchen cleanliness will be the foundation for the week. Cook’n Kids runs from 1- 4pm each day and the cost is $99 per child. Register by calling 925-1786.

Children may register for both the morning and afternoon camps and are welcome to bring a boxed lunch and stay supervised at the Learning Centre over lunch hour.
