Team Shirley entering Weekend to End Women’s Cancers
Shirley Lockey’s recent diagnosis of advance3d bone cancer has led to her grandson, Mike Lockey, spearheading formation of as Team Shirley that will take part in the 2010 Walk to End Women’s Cancers.
“Unfortunately, this is not her first bout with cancer,” Mike says.“She won the fight with Breast Cancer 20 years ago. Shirley is such a strong person that when the doctor told her she had advanced bone cancer, instead of being upset and wondering ‘Why Me?,’ she said she was thankful for the 20 years that cancer research gave her after her first fight.”
He added, “Because she has been such a strong person by my family’s side for my entire life, my sisters and I, along with the help of Faye and Geoff from Access Fitness, have decided to participate in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers on September 11 and 12 in support of her and everyone else who is or will be struggling with this disease.
“As a team, our goal is to raise over $15,000 for cancer through various events throughout the community.”
To achieve that goal, they have come up with variety of fund-raising ideas, including a 50/50 Plus Draw, merchandise sold through various channels, and fund-raising events at different venues around Orangeville.
“The biggest fund-raising method we are currently
working on is a sponsor
shirt,” Mike said. “We are encouraging local businesses to donate to our cause, and for every donation over $250, we will recognize that company’s generosity by printing their logo on the back of all t-shirts along with other supporters which will be worn by all of our walkers and supporters at all fundraising events as well as at the walk itself on Sept. 11 and 12.”
