Golden moment for Novice Tigers
The Orangeville Tigers Novice Rep team travelled to Brantford over the weekend to compete in the 29th Annual Walter Gretzky Girls hockey tournament.
After a snowy drive to Brantford the girls started the tournament on Friday with their first game against Windsor.
Starting the tournament on Friday, the girls started off well taking a 5- 2 decision from Windsor in their first game.
A few hours later they played the Brantford Novice team, coming away with another victory before taking to the ice against Lucan.
The girls started slow but soon found their stride, posting yet another win.
Saturday morning, the Tiger found themselves up against a familiar rival, the Belleville Bear Cats.
The last game these two teams played ended in a shoot out with Belleville coming out on top.
This time, the Tigers made no mistake, coming out off the opening draw out strong and fast.
Goalie Shantal Hayward was fantastic in net leading the team to a 7-2 win.
This win secured the team a place in the finals against the second place team Windsor. First period proved to be a real nail biter but the Tigers were able to score first which got the girls wanting more.
Hayward was once again “cat” like in net making some incredible saves. At the final buzzer, it was Orangeville coming out on top of a 4-1 decision.
The girls, parents and coaches showed tremendous team spirit wearing Tiger whiskers and noses and the father of “The Great One” - Walter Gretzky was more than happy to pose for a picture with the girls after their victory.
