The Orangeville Minor Bantam AA Flyers came one step closer to their goal of an Ontario Minor Hockey Association title this past weekend, posting a 4-1 decision over the Oakville Rangers to take their best of five semi-final series.

Trailing Orangeville two games to one with one tie thrown into the mix, Oakville desperately needed a win to stay in contention but knew it would be an uphill battle, playing back in Flyers territory at the Tony Rose on Saturday.

Oakville was first onto the board when Alex Cox managed to put one into Orangeville's net early in the first period.

That slim one-goal lead would not hold up forever as the Flyers dug in and got down to work.

Braiden Davis would prove to be the man with the golden stick for Orangeville in this game. At 12:25 of the second, on a set up from Michael Sutton and Shane Hillis, Davis scored his first of three goals, evening the score at 1-1 and setting up the final frame as the one to decide the series.

Both squads would step up the pace in search of that elusive go-ahead goal, generating a number of opportunities at both ends of the rink.

Flyers goalie Wade Cheesman was on the top of his game, turning away shot after shot to hold the Rangers at bay.

It was Davis, however, that seemed to break the camels back for Orangeville, picking off an Oakville clearing pass just outside the Rangers blueline. Driving straight down the middle all alone, Davis made no mistakes, first faking right then going upstairs to the left, tossing the puck up and over sprawled Oakville cager for what would prove to be the game winner with 8:22 left on the clock.

Four minutes later, he cashed in the insurance marker on a blast from the point that seemed to go in and out of the Oakville goalie’s glove, to make it 3-1 before Justin Wing nailed the Rangers coffin shut with an empty netter in the final minute to make it 4- 1 for Orangeville.

Saturday evening's win also earned the Flyers a berth in the OHMA Minor Bantam AA finals against Richmond Hill.

The series is slated to start this Saturday evening in Orangeville with the two teams taking to the ice for a 6:30 p.m. start at the Tony Rose Memorial Arena before heading back to Richmond Hill for game two on Sunday night.

A number of other Orangeville teams will also find themselves in the hunt for championship titles over the next few weeks as well.

The Flyers Minor Peewee AE squad will taking to the ice against Newmarket to challenge for their OMHA Divisional bragging rights starting this Saturday, while both the Novice AA and Novice AE editions of the Flyers will both be taking on teams from Georgina starting on Wednesday , March 10th (results unavailable at press time).
