Orangeville Wolves edge Giants 6-5
The Orangeville Wolves special hockey team hosted the Guelph Giants recently at the Alder St. Wolf Den.
The teams were very evenly matched with the Wolves coming out on top for a hard fought 6-5 victory.
There was no scoring in the first period with the Wolves Matthew Ingram coming the closest with the Giants goalie making a brilliant save off of a breakaway.
Guelph took matters into their own hands in the second period with two quick goals to open the mid-frame before Orangeville stormed back with three of their own. Mackenzie Gidge was first to the board for Orangeville off a nice feed from Michael McCreary.
Vini Thomas did all of the spade work to draw the second assist.
Matthew Moore picked up the second Wolves goal depositing a Drew Irwin rebound, Thomas picked up his second assist of the game on the goal.
The ever improving Michael McCreary gave the Wolves the lead to end the frame with Doug Myers and Braedon Peters picking up the assists.
The third period was a back and forth affair with Gidge scoring two more to complete the hat trick.
James Mastine and McCreary with his second assist set up Gidge’s second goal with Josh Sibley and Wolves rookie Tom Martin drawing the help on the hat trick marker.
Guelph would tie the score at five late in the game before Irwin would show some Crosby type flare for the assisted by Bradley Thompson and Bill Wyatt.
Adam Thompson and Kelly Hu Dong were twin towers on defense for the Wolves.
Craig Stellick and Brayden Simmons skated hard for the Wolves throughout the game despite not reaching the score sheet.
Shawn Chalmers dressed as Wolves mascot “Howler” was a big hit with both benches.
The Wolves will be hosting the Special Hockey International tournament here in Orangeville on April 15th, 16th, & 17th. Games will be played at Teen Ranch and Alder Street.
