ORANGEVILLE FLYERS had their hands full trying to contain a bigger, faster Richmond Hill Stars in game one of their Ontario Minor Hockey Association Minor Bantam championship final held at the Tony Rose on Saturday. Despite a solid effort by the Flyers, they just could not seem to even buy a goal as the Stars went on to take the series opener 4-0. Photo/MIKE MALONEY With the end of 2009- 10 hockey season clearly in sight, not just one but four Orangeville Flyers teams found themselves in battles for an OMHA title. The Minor Bantam AA, Minor Peewee AE and both Novice AA and AE squads each kicked off their championship series last week.

In the Novice division, the AE team took care of business, sweeping Georgina in the best-offive final. Georgina got a full measure of revenge, however, by sweeping Orangeville in the AA final.

The Minor Peewee AEs have a two-games-to-none stranglehold on their championship series against Newmarket, while the Minor Bantams are behind the eight-ball against a strong Richmond Hill Stars team, trailing that series 2-0.

ORANGEVILLE NOVICE AA FLYERS found themselves in a tough spot after game two of their OMHA championship final against Georgina. After being edged 5-4 in game one, the Blazers turned up the heat in game two, defeating Orangeville by a final score of 7-3 and take a 2-0 series lead. Playing in Georgina Friday night, the Flyers edged past the Blazers 3-2 to bring the series back to Orangeville on Sunday night where a win would wrap it up for Orangeville.

The boys obviously had their eyes on the prize as they dumped the visitors 5-1 to sweep the series and take the title

Photo/MIKE MALONEY Georgina turned the tables, however, with three-game sweep of Orangeville in the Novice AA finals The AA's had their hands full when they opened their series on the road Wednesday night, coming up on the wrong side of a 5-4 final. Back in Orangeville on Saturday afternoon, Orangeville managed to get out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Andrew Reynolds but it wasn't long until the Blazers answered back with one own to end the first period tied at 1-1.

Picking up the pace through the second Georgina scored three and added another of the top of the third to make it 5-before Carter Giles poked

loose puck in the crease over the blue line to draw back within three.

Again the Blazers caught the Flyers pressing, chipping another into the Orangeville goal for a 6-2 lead with 7:43 left on the clock.

In typical never say never fashion, the Flyers continued hammering away and were rewarded once more when Ryan Graham plucked the puck out of traffic in front of the crease and tossed it up and over the Blazers goalie. Unfortunately however, that would be all the offence the Flyers could muster and Georgina added an empty net marker to seal off the scoresheet at 7-3.

With its back to the wall Sunday, Orangeville could not mount a defence to the Georgina momentum and saw its 2009-2010 championship bid go down the drain with a 6-1 defeat.

Saturday evening saw the Minor Peewee AE Flyers open their campaign against Newmarket in grand style, demolishing the Redmen 6-0 at the Tony Rose.

Newmarket looked more intent on playing the body while Orangeville made the most of their opportunities playing the puck.

Evan Eagles opened the scoring for Orangeville late in the first and the Flyers never looked back from there. Cory Bois would add his first of two just 13 seconds behind Eagles' while Cody Knight opened the second with his lone goal assisted by Craig Maizis. Bois rounded out the frame with his second on the night -unassisted to make it 4-0.

Each team would have their chances through the third but penalties offset the offensive chances for both teams until with 1:34 left on the clock, Nicholas Gallant poked a loose puck in from the side of the net. Maizis sealed the deal with one more for Orangeville before the clock ran out to give the Flyers game one with a 6- 0 win.

Jackson Coates was solid between the pipes for Orangeville, turning away a number of good Newmarket scoring chances and going the distance to record the shutout.

On Tuesday night, the Peewees ran their playoff record to 14-4 when they cruised into Newmarket and doubled the home side 4-2

Game three of the series goes on Saturday at 6:45 back at the Tony Rose. At home, the Flyers have been near invincible at home in the playoffs, so far, with a 7-1 won-lost record.

The Flyers find themselves in tough against a very fast and strong Richmond Hill Stars for the Minor Bantam AA title.

They take to the ice at Tony Rose for a 5:15 p.m. start against a Stars squad that has the series on the ropes after taking the first two games of the series 4- 0.

Opening their series as well on Saturday, both teams spent most of the first testing each other with numerous end to end rushes but it was the Stars who struck first, beating Orangeville cager Luke Gamoyda to the shortside to take a 1-0 lead at 7:08 of the first.

The Stars capitalized again early in the second on the tail end of a powerplay then went up 3-0 just past the midway point and end the night for Gamoyda. Through the third, Orangeville couldn't buy a goal despite numerous chances collecting only a goal post, crossbar and missed breakaway for their efforts while Richmond Hill notched one more before the final buzzer sounded giving them a 4-0 victory and setting the scene for the Stars to win by an identical score on Sunday.
