Elation and heartbreak flowed freely onto the ice for the Orangeville Flyers this past week.
First, it was the Minor Bantam AE team taking the Tri-County title with a nail-biting 2- 1 overtime win at home last Wednesday; followed up on Saturday with the Flyers going the all the way to take the OMHA Minor Peewee AE championship title.
For the Minor Bantam AA team however, an OMHA finalist banner and silver medals marked the end of their season on Saturday after being swept 3-0 by Richmond Hill.
The win over Brampton came as touch of bittersweet revenge for the Bantam AE's.
After a very successful season where – in addition to three tournament titles – they posted a 22-3-3 record, only to have their OMHA aspirations dashed by Brampton.
Playing a tie-breaker game to decide who would go on from the OMHA qualifiers, the Battalion edged Orangeville 2-1 in overtime.
Looking to make amends for that loss, the Flyers set the tempo in the Tri-County final right off the opening face-off of game one at Tony Rose on March 13, winning that game by a final score of 3-1 and then 3-2 the next night in Brampton.
Playing back in Orangeville Wednesday night, Brampton refused to give up the fight, forcing game three into overtime with the score tied at 1-1 where Connor Anyon would score the game winner and give Orangeville the sweep the best-offive series for the championship title.
Saturday evening started off on a somber note for the Minor Bantam's. Trailing their series 2-0 against Richmond Hill, Orangeville knew they had their work cut out for them against the much bigger, faster Stars.
Down by two midway through the second, Orangeville would generate a number of chances to get back in the game, including a two-on-one shorthanded breakaway by Jordan Ross and Braiden Davis only to collect a crossbar for their efforts.
Catching Orangeville out of position while pressing on the powerplay would be the final nail in the coffin driven home by Richmond Hill as the Stars went on to post a 3-0 win to take the series by the same 3- 0 record.
Last on the ice Saturday were the Minor Peewee Flyers. With a boisterous crowd in attendance at the Tony Rose, it didn't take long for Orangeville to bring them to their feet.
Again it was Jackson Coates getting the nod for Orangeville and as usual, he was next to perfect in net .
Playing shorthanded, Nicholas Gallant weaved his way from one end of the ice to the other and snapped a wrist shot past Newmarket's starting goalie.
With just 33 seconds remaining in the first it was Gallant again, getting help from Trevor Kain, making it 2-0 and the Flyers never looked back from there.
A pair of goals by Colin Dunn and Evan Eagles combined with singles from Rylan Hartley, Kyle Cunningham and one from Cory Bois were more than enough to offset two third period Newmarket markers as the Flyers went on to post an 8-2 victory and with it, earn the OMHA Minor Peewee championship.
Two Orangeville teams still remain in contention for Tri- County titles.
Holding a commanding 2-0 series lead, the Minor Atom AA Flyers will be looking to wrap things up against Milton at home on Friday when they take to the Alder Street ice at 7 p.m against the Winterhawks.
For the Midget AA Flyers however, they will need at least two more games before they can put away the skates. Leading the series with one win and a tie, the Midget's find themselves at the Alder Street Community Centre at 8 p.m.Saturday, followed by game five back in Oakville on Sunday. Game six, if required, will also be played at Alder Street starting at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
