Further to my recent letter regarding the “slap on the wrist” treatment by former Progressive Conservative appointee judge Douglas Maund of former Tory MP Rahim Jaffer.

Thank you for writing back and enclosing a copy of your interview with Tim Naumetz of the Hill Times. When is your party and Mr. Jaffer going to come clean? Even Tim Powers, one of your party’s most prominent media analysts, calls on the convicted Mr. Jaffer to “explain what really took place”.

What a hypocrite this Mr. Jaffer is – he who campaigned against drugs, he who at one time was a hardline federal Conservative MP who touted policies against crime and to toughen the justice system.

I, like many Canadians and opposition members, wonder about the many apparent contradictions between Mr. Jaffer’s plea bargain and his past public positions. Do you think, Mr. Tilson, that he owes Canadians an explanation?

And what are we to make of Mr. Jaffer’s wife, the former federal status of women minister Helena Guergis? Wow!! What a role model? Aren’t our elected officials supposed to be honest, respected, trusted citizens? No wonder many Canadians have little or no faith in any elected official. I cannot wait for the results of the RCMP investigation of Ms. Guergis!
