‘Additional information’
I am writing to provide additional information for your readers, which I feel was omitted in the letter to the editor published on May 6, 2010, entitled: “Bill would deregulate private mal firms.”
It is important to note that the Government of Canada is strongly committed to saving thousands of Canadian jobs that will be lost if this legislation does not pass. In addition, the amendment to the Canada Post Corporation Act would only allow letter exporters to collect letters in Canada for transmittal and delivery outside Canada. If this legislation passes, Canadian businesses will have more choice and opportunity for their outbound international mail. At the same time, the amendment will retain Canada Post’s exclusive privilege to deliver mail within Canada.
The Government of Canada recognizes that Canada Post provides a fundamental service to Canadians. The Canadian Postal Service Charter, established in September 2009, reflects the Government’s commitment to a universal, effective and economically viable postal service for all Canadians and extends the moratorium on rural post office closures.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to clarify these important points for the benefit of your readers.
The Honourable Rob
Merrifield Minister of State
(Transport)
