Museum presented awards of excellence
Headwaters Arts and the Dufferin County Museum and Archives presented Arts Awards of Excellence on Saturday, May 8, at the Annual Student Art Show.
It was standing room only at the museum, where the awards were presented to talented student artists for their creative works of arts. Students, proud parents, siblings, friends and high school teachers were all among the 100 that were in attendance.
Jurors Hugh Russel, Sue Powell and Lyn Westfall had a tough time deciding among the 80- plus pieces that were first selected by teachers from the individual high schools and then submitted to be a part of the Student Art Show.
Competition was tough among the eight area high schools, but in the end, the Award of Excellence for Visual Arts Program of the Year, sponsored by Wayne Baguley of Royal LePage RCR Realty was awarded to Mayfield Secondary School. Mayfield Art teacher Marie Burnett was on hand to accept the award.
The first of two Art Awards of Excellence sponsored by Headwaters Arts was presented by Iris Casey, Headwaters Arts Student Art Show liaison, to Martina De Ruyte of Humberview Secondary School for her untitled piece. The second Art Award of Excellence, sponsored by Headwaters Arts was presented by Headwaters Arts Executive Director Sharlene Rankin to Sam Sinclair from Humberview Secondary School for her untitled piece. An Award of Excellence sponsored by Cheryl and Hugh Russel went to Susan Le of Mayfield Secondary School for her piece entitled “A Form of Muscle.”
The Jefferson Mappin Award of Excellence was presented by juror Susan Powell on behalf of Jefferson Mappin to Stephanie Nikolov of Mayfield Secondary School for her piece entitled “Artificial World”
