Municipal Election Time
This is a response to Margaret Mercer’s letter in the May 20 issue of your paper. My one and only contact with Ms Mercer was at a Council meeting over a year ago when she and others applied to fill a Council position that Janice Elliot was successful in being appointed to. Ms. Mercer has not been at a meeting before or since so I am a bit surprised by her letter.
My goal during the election campaign, regardless of who runs, will be to take the high road. Section 225 of the Municipal Act defines the role of the head of Council. It is my view that during the past few of years there have been shortfalls.
The fact I registered to run for Mayor five minutes after you could register should give an indication that I am not satisfied with the status quo.
My first newsletter in January indicated that I would be more open and communicate better and try to engage Council more in the discussion of issues they are faced with. That is still the case. Council faces many issues, not just one and I believe it is important to communicate them to the electorate so they can be informed.
I have no idea what “lists” are being referred to. I simply called the Dundalk and Shelburne Post office and asked how many places they delivered mail to in Melancthon Township. Costs related to the mailings are being paid by me personally. I have not and will not have any contributions for my campaign
The issues this Council (and the next one) are facing are well known and understood by me. They have not fallen on deaf ears. As I’ve said before, there is no application at this time. When it is filed the Council does not have to prove the quarry does NOT belong in the Township, the applicant has to prove it DOES. There are Provincial laws and official plans that have to be adhered to. This will be a protracted process with considerable public input.
The proposed application will be the biggest item that any Melancthon Council will have or has had to deal with. I believe I have the knowledge , experience and ability to navigate though the myriad of things that will be brought forward.
As always, if there are specific questions please ask.
Bill Hill Deputy Mayor
