In the church we have just completed the part of the year known as the “Festival Time” of the church, divided into the Time of Christmas and the Time of Easter. Starting with the Sunday of the Holy Trinity on May 30 we have entered into the Time of the Church which will extend until Advent. During this time the focus is not so much on the major events in the life of our Lord but on His teaching and how it is applied in the life of the church. In some traditions this Time of the Church is referred to as “ordinary.”
But ordinary is hardly the term to use when we hear from God’s Word the extra ordinary miraculous healings taking place. In many churches last Sunday people heard from Scripture two stories of widows whose sons had become ill and had died. In the reading from 1 Kings, Elijah pleaded to God to heal a boy and our Lord did bring the boy back to life. In the Gospel from St. Luke Jesus restored life to a young man, the widow of Nain’s only son.
