Council should reconsider

Subject: Demolition of County House on Zina Street:

I am writing in regards to the tearing down of one of the oldest houses in Orangeville the County-owned 1860’s Zina St. house, for expansion of the County buildings.

Orangeville council on May 31 voted to proceed with a demolition permit even after a local contractor gave two different alternatives which would have saved a piece of local history.

I agree with council that their is no money in the budget for the town to pay to save this historic house. I have to ask when the County approached the town, was no one aware this house was sitting on property needed for the expansion?

Why did the town wait until the 11Th hour before deciding something had to be done in a hurry?

As Mr. Grant, the contractor, explained, time was tight but he felt he could save this home by moving it.

I am of the thought it is probably too late to save this piece of local history which dates back four or five generations, but I ask council to reconsider their decision, as this is another piece of our heritage which will be gone, and the face of Orangeville will be changed forever.
