Unhelpful criticism

AFTER AT LEAST three decades of struggling to find an appropriate means of handling the solid wastes generated by its residents, Dufferin County has opted for a solution that one critic has labeled the “Dufferin Gas Chambers.”

The critic, June Lever, is also critical of the use of wind as a source of electricity, terming wind turbines “ridiculous” and supporting claims that they cause serious illness for those living nearby.

As is far too often the case, such critics see no need to offer realistic alternatives to the projects they attack.

As we see it, there’s no perfect solution to the problems posed by the wastes generated by a modern industrialized society, and the challenge Dufferin has had is to come up with something better than just burying it all, Toronto-style, in a landfill site.

In the circumstances, we hope readers will find reassurance in the letter elsewhere on this page from Shelburne Mayor Ed Crewson concerning the Alter NRG plasma arc gasification facility proposed for the Dufferin EcoEnergy Park.
