Outlaws over Bisons
Photo/MIKE MALONEY OUTLAWS NATHAN SMALL goes up and over the Bison defenders in OMFL Bantam football play at Westside on Sunday. After a slow start, the Outlaws picked up the pace in the final two quarters of play to post a 21-8 win over Brantford to improve their 2010 season record to 4-1.
What a difference a week makes. On the heels of of a humiliating 30-0 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham TNT, the Bantam Outlaws regrouped and, after a slow start, rebounded to post a 21- 8 win over the Brantford Bisons at home this past Sunday afternoon on the Westside gridiron.
Orangeville took an early lead when Nathan Small rolled in across the Bisons goal line in the first quarter with Christian LeBlanc successfully kicking the one point conversion to give them a 7-0 lead. Brantford would roll right back with a series of their own, cashing in on Orangeville penalties to put them within striking distance. Then, after switching ends to start the second, scored a touchdown and ran the ball in for a two point conversion to take an 8- 7 lead.
Despite the best efforts of Outlaw quarterback Evan Bryk to march his troops downfield towards the Bisons zone, penalties by his own side cancelled out whatever gains they made and soon Brantford had possession of the ball inside the Orangeville 20 yard line.
True to form, however , the Outlaw defence again stepped up by recovering a Brantford fumble to give Orangeville the ball.
Starting now from their own 12 yard line, Bryk handed off to Small who ran the ball to the midfield stripe. Working their way into the Bisons 35, the penalty bug pushed Orangeville once again back into their own end. On the final play of the quarter, Shawn Woods was sweeping left and looked like he might have the wheels to go all the way. He was pulled down by the Brantford defenders, however, and the half ended with Orangeville trailing by one.
After taking possession of the ball on the Brantford 40 early in the third quarter, an objectionable conduct call against Orangeville cost them 20 yards of hard fought field position earned for them by the defence. Not wanting to surrender the ball once again, Bryk opted to carry the ball and ran up through the middle to get within the chains once again.
He would then go to the air finding Small down field, who picked the ball out of the air in traffic, hit the ground, turned and ran it to the Brantford three yard line.
On the very next play Woods ran it over the line to give Orangeville a 13-8 lead and, from that point on, Orangeville never looked back.
The Outlaws defensive wall continued to shut the Bisons offense down tighter than G20 security, forcing them to turn the ball back over to Orangeville midway through the fourth after sacking Brantford's quarterback.
Driving the ball back down field, again it was Woods punching through the middle from the two yard line for his second touchdown of the game while Bryk went to the air on the conversion, tossing a pass over the top to Small on the right side making it 21-8 where the score would remain at the final whistle.
This coming weekend finds both the Outlaws Bantam as well as Varsity squads back in action. On Sunday the Bantam's will be looking
make it 5-1 when they head west to play the Lions in Cambridge while the Varsity squad will be looking to record their first win of 2010 when they host Clarington Tigercats in a game starting at 12 p.m.
