Retired OPP officer convicted of sex assaults
A former OPP officer will be back in Superior Court in Orangeville July 5 to set a date for his sentencing on several sexual assault charges, some of which date back to the 1970s.
Robert Lewis’s appearance before Superior Court Justice Joseph Fragomeni in Orangeville Tuesday followed a lengthy trial in Toronto on 25 charges. He was convicted on 19 of those, and the judge released 213 pages of reasons for the verdicts.
The charges had been laid against Mr. Lewis, now 62, in 2006.
Justice Fragomeni said the accused used “his position of trust” as a police officer to inappropriately sexually touch his victims and have them touch him.
According to the decision, the charges on which Mr. Lewis was convicted included fondling, masturbation and oral sex.
Some of the events occurred in his police cruiser.
Mr. Lewis, who now lives in Fenelon Falls, retired in 1997 after working 30 years with the OPP in detachments at Downsview, Snelgrove (now Caledon), Minaki, Islington and Coboconk.
The first complainant to come forward alleged he was sexually assaulted at the age of either 12 or 13 and again when he was 16.
