A correspondent’s disagreement with Fr. John Lockyer
A correspondent’s disagreement with Fr. John Lockyer seemed unaware that the Westminster Confession is irrelevant to Anglicans. For them the term ‘Protestant’ means ‘non-Roman’, not ‘anti- Catholic’.
As to the Christian Eucharist, there are extreme positions. One deprives the Scriptural words of meaning. The other defines ‘the Presence’ in Aristotelian terms. An Anglican Communion hymn says “Thou art here; we know not how”.
All Anglicans are familiar with the prayer “Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of they dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us”.
The Anglican failing is undue liberalism. That of Calvinism is sectarianism.
